Welcome

The Vale and Downland Beekeepers' Association was founded in 1963 and since 1991 has been a registered charity (1015801).

We represent the interests of beekeepers and beekeeping in the Vale of the White Horse, Oxfordshire. Our membership spans from Newbury through Oxford to Banbury, Swindon to Reading and surrounding areas.

Our aims are to promote beekeeping and increase public awareness of bees and their importance to the environment. We are here to serve those who are already beekeepers, beginners who want to start beekeeping and need instruction, and anyone who wishes to be associated with bees and beekeeping in our area.

We are affiliated to the British Beekeepers Association (BBKA) and therefore our members enjoy a range of benefits including the BBKA News, Insurance and much more. Our membership continues to grow and currently stands at 157.

Swarms

A swarm of honey-bees May 2013 - photo John Eustace

If you come across a swarm of bees don't panic. Please do not disturb the bees, they are usually quite docile while they are swarming and they may not stay in place for more than a few hours. BEFORE you call anyone please do your best to identify the bees - if you are sure they are honey bees you can contact a local beekeeper who will help via the BBKA Swarm Map. To find details of someone local to you please visit: BBKA Swarm Removal . All VDBKA swarm collectors have made their location and contact details available on the BBKA Swarm Map - managed by the British Beekeepers Association.
Bees in buildings: Please note all of our swarm collectors or indeed other beekeeping organisations are unable to work at height or dismantle building structures due to BBKA insurance restrictions. We therefore recommend you read this document and then contact a specialist company.
